NRSW Public Affairs Guidance - “Military Wives of San Diego” Outreach

A television casting company has been aggressively seeking Southern California
applicants for a proposed series called MILITARY WIVES OF SAN DIEGO. Doron Ofir
Casting has sent notices out to a variety of military-related communities and
organizations seeking local wives of enlisted men and officers for casting
interviews.

Various Navy and Marine Corps Ombudsman, family readiness and key volunteer
groups and affiliated organizations have already been approached by Doron Ofir
Casting to help find potential cast members and help generate interest in the
show.

The proposed series and the application-interview-casting process are being done
without the support of the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense. Neither DON nor DOD have even been officially approached for assistance with this production.

In widely distributed promotional material, the casting company describes the
potential series as an “unprecedented opportunity” to document Navy spouses and
the “true story behind love and life in the military.” Doron Ofir Casting has
also casted similarly themed reality series such as JERSEY SHORE, MILLIONAIRE
MATCHMAKER, and THE A-LIST. Based on the description of the proposed MILITARY WIVES OF SAN DIEGO program and the tone of the other series this company has casted, the show will not be provided any local official Navy support.

Navy personnel should avoid the appearance of support to the series as members
of the Department of the Navy. Anyone interviewing or auditioning for the series
should not do so in uniform. Navy spouses who choose to interview or audition or
are later cast in the series do so as private citizens and will not receive Navy
public affairs support or guidance.

Queries about the series should be referred to Brian O’Rourke, Public Affairs
Office, Navy Region Southwest, (619) 532-4717.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF SAN DIEGO COUNTY

Military mentoring program that serves children of military families with deployable parents.

Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers meet with their Little Brothers and Little Sisters once a week for one hour (same day and time each week) at the child’s school site or a nearby community center.  During that hour the Big and Little matches engage in activities such as board games, arts and crafts, playing ball, throwing Frisbees, jumping rope, and other fun activities!

The focus is for the match to develop a one-on-one friendship and for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters to provide the children with positive role models and mentors.  The children who are referred to Operation Bigs have a parent who is currently deployed, has been deployed in the past, or will be deploying in the near future.  These children are in need of another adult in their life to provide encouragement and companionship during these stressful times.  The individual attention that the mentors provide in this program also enhances the children’s academic and social development.

There are four Operation Bigs sites in San Diego.  They are listed below with the meeting days and times during the school year:

     -MCAS Miramar, Mondays from 3:30pm - 4:30pm

     -Point Loma, Tuesdays from 3:35pm – 4:35pm

     -Coronado, Wednesdays from 1:05pm – 2:05pm or 1:40pm – 2:40pm

     -Serra Mesa, Thursdays from 4:00pm – 5:00pm

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and be able to commit to the program for one year.  They must participate in an in-person interview, provide references, and pass a background check.

For more information, please contact Jannette Kutchins at 619.674.0483 or jannettek@sdbigs.org
