As part of an ongoing effort to better serve the military community, the American Red Cross announced that it will move to a single telephone number for its emergency communication services.
Beginning June 13, 2011, at 8:00 a.m. EDT, all military members and their families can use one number- 877-272-7337 (U.S. Toll Free) to send an urgent message to a service member. The change means that all military members and their families can use this single number to initiate an emergency communication, regardless of where they live.
A call to 877-272-7337 allows Red Cross emergency communications services to put military personnel in touch with their families following the death or serious illness of an immediate family member, the birth of a service member’s child or grandchild or when a family faces other emergencies. Additional Red Cross services such as case management and emergency financial assistance also are available. For those stationed overseas, the three options for calling will remain the same: calling 877-272-7337 direct, accessing the number through a military operator, or calling the local Red Cross station.
The Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program provides assistance to more than 2 million service members and many of the nation’s 24 million veterans. The Red Cross provides emergency communications linking service members with their families during time of crisis; comfort and care in military and veterans medical facilities; access to financial assistance in partnership with the military aid societies; information and referral and assistance to veterans.

Referral and Prior Authorization Requirement Changes — How To Get Care from Tricare

When you seek health care, there are services that require approval from both your primary care manager (PCM) and Health Net.

Some referral and prior authorization requirements changed on April 1, 2011 with the beginning of the new TRICARE contract. In fact, Health Net referrals are now required for most specialty services for TRICARE Prime beneficiaries regardless of where they live.

The best thing to do when you need health care is to follow these steps:

Talk with your primary care manager (PCM) or family doctor about the care you need.  See if a Health Net approval is required. If so, ask your doctor to send a request to Health Net for approval.  Upon approval from Health Net, set your appointment with the doctor to receive your care.

Detailed information on referral and prior authorization requirements are available on Health Net’s website at www.hnfs.com for you to follow.

Freedom Walk 2011 will be help on September 11, 2011 at 9:00 am in Mission Bay at De Anza Cove in San Diego.  Join us for this free walk as a memorial to the lives lost on 9/11 and a tribute to veterans.  Registrations will begin in late July on our website for the walk.  Keynote speaker is Jerry Coleman who is the only Major League Baseball player who saw combat duty in two wars. He was a Marine Corps fighter pilot who flew 57 missions in World War II in the South Pacific and 63 in Korea.  He is a San Diego sports icon inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a broadcaster and a long time broadcaster for the San Diego Padres.  After the short ceremony there will be a 5K walk along Mission Bay.

It is not even officially Summer yet and we are planning our Adopt a Family 2011 program.  This program is to assist military families experiencing a financial hardship to have a special treat from the community.  This is not meant to be the family’s entire holiday but a token of appreciation from the community.  Families experiencing a financial hardship should apply to participate to receive extra assistance for the holiday.  This year we will start accepting applications beginning on September 1st and will stop accepting on October 15th.  We are moving up the dates to allow for more coordination time for all participants.  Make sure to continue to check our website to get updates on this program.  Applications will be posted on our site in mid July.
